numbness
Numbness can be a medical symptom of much worse things beneath the surface. Doctors will often ask if you have tingling in your fingers and extremities because being numb in certain areas can reveal a much deeper problem. In some cases, these can be serious issues like devastating brain tumors. Spiritually, it's not as simple to diagnose; but numbness can be a precursor to something deeper going on inside.
I've been recently really "bothered" by this issue a lot. Numbness can set in SO quickly. We start to walk down a certain path in our life that doesn't glorify God and BAM there it is. Now we're numb to it. We stop listening. We tune God out so quickly. James talks about this a bit... have you been here?
James 1:12-15. (ESV)
Blessed is the man who remains steadfast under trial, for when he has stood the test he will receive the crown of life, which God has promised to those who love him. Let no one say when he is tempted, I am being tempted by God, for God cannot be tempted with evil, and he himself tempts no one. But each person is tempted when he is lured and enticed by his own desire. Then desire when it has conceived gives birth to sin, and sin when it is fully grown brings forth death.
Numbness towards God doesn't just happen. It starts with a thought that gives birth to sin in our lives. Maybe it's a website that "nobody will know" and "won't hurt" anyone else. Maybe it's a little lie that was supposed to protect somebody else. I'm not sure where it begins in your heart; but I know that thought leads to an action. It's the action that produces "death" according to James. That setback can be small, or the results could be catastrophic.
Reversing Numbness Starts on Our Knees. When we've offended God, there's a little part of our heart that we've let die. I believe that if you have accepted Jesus as your Lord and Savior, you are secure in your salvation; but that doesn't mean you can't let a little part of your heart die towards God.
Today, I'm getting on my knees before the Creator thanking Him for His grace and praying that he brings light into some dark areas of my heart. Who's with me?
