Geoff Surratt - 10 Stupid Things That Keep Churches From Growing

1. Trying to do it all yourself.
-why do we do it all?
-the 'lonely martyr' syndrome.
-down deep behind this, we realize the 'emotional perks' of showing
ppl how much you do.
-the 'hired gun' diseases. 'i'm payed to do it.'
-it's hard to pass things off & train people. We keep doin it bc it's
'easier' to do it ourselves.
-rejection aversion. We're fearful of being rejected so we don't make
the offer.
-WHY SHARE THE LOAD?
-Eph. 4:11-12.
-Eph. 2:10.
-HOW DO WE GIVE IT AWAY? connect the dots. The big ask... be careful
how you do it. Face to face... 1 on 1.
-how to give away your job... SHOW THE ROPES. QUIT. Make a list of
everything I do in the ministry. Circle the things only I can do.
We're there as leaders to equip & give away. What are the things
NOBODY should be doing, your church will grow.

2. Wrong role for the pastor's family.
-How to destroy your family... play the ministry card. This card
doesn't work. Lead with the queen of hearts. Trump family time with
ministry. Most 'emergencies' can wait in ministry. Tip your family's
hand. Bet your family's future.
-how to rebuild your marriage. Don't ever think your marriage is
immune from failure. MARRIAGE IS ABOUT BEING THERE!!! Marriage is
about taking time NOT TO DO MINISTRY. Marriage is about getting HELP!
we teach this stuff & then we're the last ones to do it. HOMEWORK is
to go out on a date with our spouse & ask 'what impact is ministry
having on our marriage & our family?' & listen.

3. Favoring discipline of reconciliation.
-reconciling should always take precedence over discipline.
-'big tent' philosophy. Things that we don't argue/discuss bc they are
foundational. Things around that... don't draw lines.

4. Providing 2nd rate worship service. The idea of 'good enough -
effectiveness.'

5. Settling for low quality of children's ministry.

6. Promoting talent over integrity.
-not worry a ton about character bc someone is talented.

7. Cling to a bad location.

8. Copying another successful church.
-you can learn from other churches, but never clone.

9. Mixing ministry & business.

10. Letting commitees steer the ship.

Great list. I work at a church so I see a lot of the 'behind the stages' type stuff and I love the insight this list gives.

Big ones that stick out to me are 'settling with the good enough' We just finished a huge renovation project at our church. For many many years our church has lived with a good enough mentality for our facility and we just finally tried to step it up and make our facility as God-honoring as possible.

Thanks for sharing.

Jason,

Thanks for sharing. I totally agree that sub-par worship services are lame. Having said that, since the notes were actually my own, I wanted to clarify something. Actually...

Geoff was making the opposite point. I would always go the route of "excellence" as well; but Larry & Geoff were pointing out that you have to know when it's "good enough." In other words, they were making the point that the notion of "excellence probably needs to be dropped from some churches as people can't "plug" in to something excellent.

Hope that makes sense. It was really stimulating for me. Don't get me wrong, they both believed in great worship services; but they said that you have to keep it just above the "cringe" factor so that people can easily plug in.

In Christ,

Kyle
