Barnabas - cultivating & developing leaders.

1. Develop financial generosity (he sold his land to help others).
-Tithe whether you feel like it or not even as a leader.
-if I won't share my temporal stuff, I won't be trusted with true
riches. Barnabas got this right.
-generous hearts at the top are the key to unlocking poweful ministry.
-starting leadership with a tough look in the mirror.

2. look for annointing, not pedigree. (Barnabas brought Paul to the
disciples) Acts 4:26-27.
-Saul lacked all the necessary credentials.
-Take the chances that lead to real fruit.
-never be smart & safe.

3. Defend the right to be different (he defended Paul's ministry to
Gentiles)
-he judged it by the fruit... not his comfort zone.
-(Acts 11:19-30; Acts 15:1-35).
-defend the young eagles.
-be willing to step aside. Barnabas & Paul became Paul & Barnabas.
-A leaders hire A+ players.
-it's in how many shoulders you stand on. It's how many stand on you.

4. Be willing to step aside.

5. Don't let a favorite child become a spoiled child (he insisted on
bringing John Mark).
-the mission is more important than the relationship - John Mark
deserved a 2nd chance.
-without a Barnabas, there's no such thing as Gentile Christianity.

RANDOM THOUGHTS ON LEADERSHIP FROM LARRY OSBORNE.

1. Ministry is addictive.
-Dont ask for too much too fast.

2. The ponies are more important than the mail.
-protect your team from burnout.

3. Develop a nose for leaders & a heart for the regular guy.
-disdain for non-leaders will destroy your soul.
-contrarians guide to spiritual development book by Larry Osborne.
Read it.
-if you don't learn to celebrate non-leaders, you'll never have great
leaders in your church.

4. Beware of high passion, high contentious people.
-those are people who are contentious for right thugs are still
contentious/argumentative/pugnacious.
-how does that person look at people who don't share their passion.
-great theological training with a bad attitude is bad news.

5. Beware of smothering discipleship.
-creates co-dependency... NOT leaders.
-leadership training develops leaders, not just spreading information.
-on the job training is always going to be the best training.
-organic, standing alongside somebody leadership is the key.

6. Empowerment & excellence will always be in tension.
-DON'T EVER FORGET WHICH ONE IS BIBLICAL.
-you don't have to go to excellence, just stay beneath the cringe
factor.
-worship in church isn't there to impress visiting pastors, worship is
for the church. ALWAYS.
-excellence is doing the best you can with the best you have. Larry
challenges this thought.
-not everybody wants to be all we see they could be.

7. Always make room at the table for young eagles.
-if your young eagles can't fly with you, they'll fly from you.

8. Empowerment without a platform is like responsibility without
authority.
-give away the organizational and cultural symbols of power.
-your church has significance or 'juice...' give them away.

9. The leaders who got you here might not be able to get you there.
-the right people doing the right things is not a luxury - it's a
necessity!

In Christ,

Kyle
