Experts Apply Here...

Hello friends, it's Kyle. Blogging is somewhat important to me; and lately I've put it a bit on the back burner... so here I am. My blog today is more of a question I am seeking input on. Are you an expert at something? I wish I could say that I am an absolute expert "X;" but the truth is that I really have always been somewhat of a "jack-of-all trades/master-of-none" kinda guy.

Perhaps an element of "expertise" comes with certain personality types; and it could be very possible that there are serious genetics involved; but for whatever reason, the "expert" gene doesn't seem to identify with me. To clarify what I mean by the "expert" gene. I know people that have one thing they just hone in on and they experience great rewards from it.

I suppose it might be said that expertise is when others recognize quantifiable success, not just our own thoughts about something. Under those parameters, the closest thing to an "expertise" I experience is perhaps a strong relational ability. Sometimes people tell me I help them feel comfortable in uncomfortable situations; but I'm not sure that qualifies. I also know that for whatever reason, in every group I join, I wind up leading it. That doesn't make me an expert at leadership by any stretch; but I think it's ingrained in my DNA somewhere.

What do you think about this? Are you an expert at something? I'm honestly searching for how different people "find" their particular area that takes them from nominally successful to "ragingly" successful. Here's to hoping for a good discussion...

In Christ,

Kyle

I think our culture is one of expertise in a single area, whereas, say, the Australians are jacks of all trades, mostly out of their original need for survival, as in many cultures. Being a jack of all trades allows one to know how to move in any situation, survival or not. Perhaps it's good to be a jack of all trades, know your areas of strength and then try to know as much as you can about the things that are your natural abilities and you are inclined towards.

Thanks mom. You always did know me best :)
